復活徹夜祭　説教「恐れることはない。ガリラヤへ行きなさい」

今日の福音で、墓に向かった女性たちは、思いがけない知らせを受けます。「恐れることはない。あのかたは復活された。」そして天使も、復活されたイエスご自身も、弟子たちにこう告げます。「ガリラヤへ行きなさい。」この福音で心に残る言葉は、二つです。「恐れることはない。」そして、「ガリラヤへ行きなさい。」

弟子たちは、主の十字架の死によって、希望を失っていました。自分たちの信仰も歩みも、すべて終わってしまったように感じていたことでしょう。しかも彼らの心には、主を見捨てて逃げたという後悔もあったはずです。さらに、自分たちもまた危険な目に遭うかもしれないという恐れの中にいました。その弟子たちに向かって、主はまず言われます。「恐れることはない。」

それはイエスの復活は、絶望と死が私たちの最後ではないということです。罪も、失敗も、人間の弱さも、主の命、愛より強くはないということです。主のいのちは、死を超える力をもっています。だから主は、「恐れるな」と言われるのです。そしてもう一つ、主は言われます。「ガリラヤへ行きなさい。」ガリラヤは、弟子たちが最初に主と出会い、招かれ、従い始めた場所でした。言ってみれば、信仰の原点です。主は弟子たちを、もう一度その原点へ帰らせようとしておられるのです。

それは、ただ昔の場所に戻れという意味ではありません。最初の恵みを思い起こしなさい、ということです。主に呼ばれた喜び、神の愛に触れた驚き、希望が心に灯されたあの出発点に、もう一度立ち返りなさい、ということです。

これは私たちにとっても同じです。私たちにも、それぞれの「ガリラヤ」があります。神が最初に私たちに触れてくださった時、信仰が芽生えた時、主の招きを感じた時、信仰の喜びを感じたその原点があります。復活祭は、その原点に帰るようにという招きでもあります。けれどもそれは、昔を懐かしむことではありません。以前の自分に戻ることでもありません。そうではなく、絶望や悲しみ、憎しみ、無理解、不寛容といった自分の殻に閉じこもることをやめ、復活の主の光のもとで、自分の人生を新たに見つめ直すことです。喜びも、苦しみも、失敗も、弱さも含めて、主の導きの中で受けとめ直し、もう一度心新たに歩み始めることです。

今日、主は私たちにも語っておられます。「恐れることはない。」「ガリラヤへ行きなさい。」信仰の原点に帰りなさい。最初に受けた恵みを思い起こしなさい。そして、もう一度、復活された主と出会い、新たに主に従って共に歩みなさい。

今夜、洗礼を受けた方々と共に、私たち皆があらためて、自分に生きるのではなく、自分のために死んで復活された信仰・希望・愛に生きる喜びで満たされますように。主は復活されたのです。その主が共におられるからこそ、私たちは罪と悪を退け、恐れずに主に信頼して主の道歩むことができます。その主と共に、新たに真の命の道を歩み始めましょう。

Easter Vigil Homily　“Do not be afraid; go to Galilee.”

In today’s Gospel, the women who went to the tomb received unexpected news: “Do not be afraid. He has been raised.” Then both the angel and the risen Jesus Himself say to the disciples: “Go to Galilee.” Two phrases from this Gospel remain especially in our hearts: “Do not be afraid,” and “Go to Galilee.”

The disciples had lost hope because of the Lord’s death on the Cross. They must have felt that their faith and their whole journey had come to an end. Moreover, they must have carried in their hearts the pain and regret of having abandoned the Lord and fled. They were also living in fear, thinking that they too might face danger. To those disciples, the Lord first says: “Do not be afraid.”

This means that the Resurrection of Jesus shows us that despair and death are not the end for us. Sin, failure, and human weakness are not stronger than the life and love of the Lord. The life of Christ has the power to overcome even death itself. That is why the Lord says, “Do not be afraid.”

And then He says something more: “Go to Galilee.” Galilee was the place where the disciples first met the Lord, where they were called by Him, and where they began to follow Him. In a sense, it was the starting point of their faith. The Lord is leading them back once more to that origin.

This does not simply mean returning to a place from the past. It means remembering the first grace. It means returning once again to that point of departure: the joy of being called by the Lord, the wonder of encountering the love of God, the moment when hope was first lit in their hearts.

The same is true for us. Each of us has his or her own “Galilee.” There is a place, a moment, an origin in our lives where God first touched us, where faith began to awaken in us, where we sensed the Lord’s call, where we first tasted the joy of faith. Easter is also an invitation to return to that beginning.

But this does not mean simply feeling nostalgic about the past. Nor does it mean going back to our former selves. Rather, it means ceasing to shut ourselves up within the shell of despair, sorrow, hatred, misunderstanding, and intolerance, and instead looking anew at our lives in the light of the risen Lord. It means receiving once again, under His guidance, everything in our lives—our joys, our sufferings, our failures, and our weaknesses—and beginning to walk again with renewed hearts.

Today the Lord also speaks to us: “Do not be afraid.” “Go to Galilee.” Return to the origin of your faith. Remember the grace you first received. And once again, encounter the risen Lord, and follow Him anew, walking together with Him.

Tonight, together with those who are receiving Baptism, may all of us be filled once again with the joy of living no longer for ourselves, but in faith, hope, and love in the One who died and rose for us. The Lord is truly risen. And because He is with us, we can reject sin and evil, trust in Him without fear, and walk in His way. With Him, let us begin anew to walk on the path of true life.
