聖金曜日　説教

兄弟姉妹の皆さん、私たちは今日、主の受難と死の神秘の前に立っています。

人は生涯のうちに、自分のために命をかけてくれた人のことを忘れることはできません。ある人にとって、それは実の親であり、あるいは育ての親、また真実な友であるかもしれません。しかし、私たちキリスト者にとって、何より深く心に刻まれるべきお方は、私たちの主イエス・キリストです。主は、私たちのために死んでくださいました。これこそ、私たちの信仰の中心にある真理です。もちろん、主の復活は決定的な勝利です。けれども本日、聖金曜日にあって、教会はまず私たちを十字架のもとへ導きます。私たちは今日、主の十字架の神秘を、沈黙と畏れのうちに黙想しなければなりません。

主イエスは、私たちを悪の誘惑から、罪の束縛から、死の暗闇の力から解き放つために、ご自分のいのちをささげてくださいました。私たちの汚れを清め、神の真理と慈しみのうちに生きることができるようにしてくださったのです。私たちの救いは、神の子が命をかけて成し遂げてくださった出来事です。

主は、十字架から降りることもおできになったはずです。けれども、そうはなさいませんでした。なぜなら、力の誇示によって生まれるものは真の信仰ではないからです。主は、奇跡的な力によってではなく、極みまで愛し抜くことによって、ご自分が誰であるかを示されました。ヨハネ福音書の「成し遂げられた」という言葉は、主が「極みまで愛し抜かれた」ことを示しています。聖書において愛するとは、ただ相手を大切に思うことではありません。その人が神のみ旨にかなって生き、真の幸いに至ることができるように、自分のすべてを尽くすことです。イエスの愛とは、私たちが神のいのちに生きる者となるために、ご自分のすべてをささげてくださることです。そのため主は、神の愛から私たちを遠ざけるあらゆる罪、不信仰、かたくなさ、利己主義、冷酷さ、傲慢を取り除くために、ご自分を「世の罪を除く神の小羊」としてささげられました。そしてこの救いは、ただ少し反省すれば済むような浅いものではありません。私たちは遠くから十字架を眺めるだけでは足りないのです。

主の十字架の足もとに立ち、私たちのために傷つき、苦しみ抜かれた主のお姿を見つめなければなりません。それは誰のためでありましょうか。私たちのためです。私たちの罪の贖いのため、私たちをご自分の愛へと立ち帰らせるため、そして世の悪を打ち砕くためです。この苦しむ主を見ずして、私たちは真実に「この方は神の子である」「この方は世の救い主である」と告白することはできません。

私たちは皆、主のお姿の前に心を打たれ、主の脇腹から流れ出た血と水によって清められ、新たないのちを注がれる必要があります。しかも主は、ただかつて私たちのために苦しまれたお方であるだけではありません。今もなお、私たちの人生の苦悩を共に担ってくださるお方です。私たちの苦しみが、ただの敗北や絶望ではなく、キリストが他者のために注がれた愛に結ばれることを、主は教えてくださいます。それゆえ今日、私たちは神の子の愛に深く感謝をささげるとともに、苦しむ人々と連帯し、自らの十字架を担って主と共に歩む恵みを願いたいと思います。主が私たちを、共に愛を生きる者として強めてくださいますように。

Good Friday Homily

Brothers and sisters, today we stand before the mystery of the Lord’s Passion and Death.

In the course of one’s life, one never forgets a person who gave his or her life for one’s sake. For some, that may be a parent, an adoptive parent, or a true friend. But for us Christians, the one who must be engraved most deeply in our hearts is our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us. This is the truth at the very heart of our faith. Of course, the Resurrection is the definitive victory. Yet on this Good Friday, the Church first leads us to the foot of the Cross. Today we must contemplate the mystery of the Lord’s Cross in silence and holy awe.

The Lord Jesus offered his life in order to free us from the seduction of evil, from the bondage of sin, and from the dark power of death. He cleansed us of our uncleanness and opened for us the way to live in the truth and mercy of God. Our salvation is something the Son of God accomplished by giving his life.

The Lord could have come down from the Cross. Yet he did not. For what is born from a display of power is not true faith. The Lord revealed who he is, not through miraculous self-assertion, but by loving to the very end. The words of Saint John’s Gospel, “It is finished,” show that he loved to the end. In the Scriptures, to love does not simply mean to cherish someone. It means to give oneself completely so that the other may live according to God’s will and attain true blessedness. The love of Jesus means that he gives his whole self so that we may live in the life of God.

For this reason, the Lord offered himself as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,” in order to remove every sin, unbelief, hardness of heart, selfishness, cruelty, and pride that separates us from the love of God. And this salvation is not something shallow, as though a little regret were enough. It is not enough simply to look at the Cross from a distance.

We must stand at the foot of the Lord’s Cross and gaze upon him who was wounded and suffered for our sake. For whom was this? For us. For the atonement of our sins, to bring us back to his love, and to break the power of evil in the world. Unless we look upon the suffering Lord, we cannot truly confess, “This man is truly the Son of God,” “This is the Savior of the world.”

All of us must be moved before the Lord’s suffering, cleansed by the blood and water flowing from his pierced side, and filled with new life. And the Lord is not only the one who once suffered for us in the past. Even now he is the one who bears the sufferings of our lives with us. He teaches us that our suffering does not end in mere defeat or despair, but can be united with the love that Christ poured out for others.

Therefore today, as we give profound thanks for the love of the Son of God, let us also ask for the grace to stand in solidarity with those who suffer, to carry our own cross, and to walk with the Lord.

May the Lord strengthen us to live in love together.
