Welcome to Toshima Church
Toshima Church was established in 1949 in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
The church is located along Yamate Dori, right near the Nishi-Ikebukuro exit of the Metropolitan Expressway Loop Route 2, and near Shiinamachi Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.
Both are conveniently located 7 minutes walk from Kanamemachi Station on the Yurakucho Subway Line.
Currently, the chief priest is Father Noboru Tanaka (18th generation)..
Father John Joseph Puthenkalam, S.J., had been assisting with the pastoral care of the English Mass community, but he resigned in February 2026.
The English Mass was instituted in 1990 by Father Cyril Murphy of the Missionary Society of St. Columban and continues to draw a diverse community from different nationalities.
The church grounds also house of St. Patrick's Kindergarten and serve as a long-standing base for the Boy Scouts, making the church a beloved part of the local community.
The Toshima Church was designed by architect Antonin Raymond.
It was built in 1956 and dedicated to St. Patrick, the patron saint of the same year.
Even today, it is one of the churches visited by many architecture enthusiasts.
The church is open to anyone during daytime.
