Toshima Church was established in 1949 in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

The church is located along Yamate Dori, right near the Nishi-Ikebukuro exit of the Metropolitan Expressway Loop Route 2, and near Shiinamachi Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.

Both are conveniently located 7 minutes walk from Kanamemachi Station on the Yurakucho Subway Line.

Currently, the chief priest is Father Noboru Tanaka (18th).

Father John Joseph Putenkaram, a Jesuit, helps pastor the English Mass community.

The English Mass at this church was introduced in 1990 by the then-presiding priest, the St.

It was started by Father Ciroli Murphy and still attracts believers from many nationalities.

There is also St. Patrick's Kindergarten on the grounds of the church.

It has also been a base for Boy Scouts since ancient times.

It is also popular with local people.

The Toshima Church was designed by architect Antonin Raymond.

It was built in 1956 and dedicated to St. Patrick, the patron saint of the same year.

Even today, it is one of the churches visited by many architecture enthusiasts.

The cathedral is open to anyone during the day.

Our entire church community looks forward to welcoming you.

Architect Antonin Raymond

The design of Toshima Church was by Antonin Raymond.

Raymond, who was born in the Czech Republic, came to Japan in 1919 as a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, helped design the Imperial Hotel, and is known for leaving many famous buildings in Japan after becoming independent.

The architectural features of Toshima Church are its exposed concrete walls and folded-board wall structure, which harmonize well with the stained glass that lets in the light and the wide curved eaves. It is said that the benches, fittings, doorknobs, etc. of the church were designed by Mrs. Noemi.
