今夜、主イエスは弟子たちを通して教会に、ご自分の救いの業を記念するよう、聖体の神秘を託されました。それは、単に過去の出来事を思い出すためではありません。主の愛が、教会の中にいつも生きた現実としてとどまり続けるためです。

イエスは今も聖体のうちに現存し、私たちを愛し、ご自分のいのちを与え続けてくださいます。赦し、慰め、癒し、そして立ち上がらせてくださいます。ですから、今夜の聖体祭儀は、最後の晩餐をただ追想するだけではなく、その同じ主の愛の現実に、私たちが今ここであずかる出来事なのです。

しかし、最後の晩餐にはユダもいました。またその後、主を裏切り見捨てて逃げ去った弟子たちも皆いました。私たちも同じです。罪に弱く、自己正当化や利得、愚かさを抱えて生きています。けれども、まさにそのような私たちだからこそイエスは洗い清めたいのであり、主はご自分のいのちを与えたいと思う、極みまで愛しておられるのです。

主は、聖体を与える際、まず弟子たちの足を洗われました。私たちはペトロと同じように、イエスがしてくださることの意味を、初めから十分に理解しているわけではありません。しかし、苦楽を伴う信仰生活の歩みの中で、少しずつわかるようにされていったのです。思い出してください、イエスを知らないと言って逃げ去ったペトロは、バチカンの丘の上で殉教する時、イエスに洗っていただいた輝かしい足を天に向けて主の愛の記憶を証したのです。

今夜の洗足は、単なる謙遜の模範ではありません。それは、私たちがまず主によって清められ、赦され、愛されていることを示しています。そして、主に洗っていただいた者、主の愛を受けた者は、今度は互いに足を洗い合う者、すなわち、互いに赦し合い、愛し合う者へと変えられていきます。そこに、主への深い感謝と信仰の喜びが生まれます。

私たちの世界には、戦争や貧困、争いがあります。しかし、それは遠い場所だけのことではありません。私たち自身の中にも、無理解、不信仰、愛の欠如、憎しみ、差別、利己主義があります。それは、私たちが、自分が洗われたこと、赦されたこと、愛されたことを、まだ十分にわかっていないしるしでもあります。だからこそイエスは、互いに足を洗い合い続け、赦し合い、愛し合い続けるようにと教えられました。しかも主は、それを単なる教訓としてではなく、ご自分のいのちを現実に与え続けることによって、その愛を示してくださっているのです。

このように私たちは、この主の愛を生きるよう招かれています。教会の中で、家庭の中で、社会の中で、キリストの心に全ての人が生きるよう招かれています。そのために主は、今夜、私たちを洗い、いのちの糧を与え、ご自分の愛を極みまで示してくださっているのです。

この聖なる祭儀の中で、主に洗っていただき、主に赦され、主のからだによって養われ、愛で満たされる者として、私たちもまた、神が残してくださったこの不思議な救いのわざを、心新たに記念していこうではありませんか。アーメン。

Tonight, through his disciples, the Lord Jesus entrusted to the Church the mystery of the Eucharist, so that his saving work might be remembered. This was not meant simply as a remembrance of past events. Rather, it was given so that the love of the Lord might continue to abide in the Church as a living reality.

Even now, Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. He continues to love us and to give us his own life. He forgives us, consoles us, heals us, and raises us up again. Therefore, the Eucharistic celebration we take part in tonight is not merely a recollection of the Last Supper. It is an event in which we ourselves share, here and now, in that same reality of the Lord’s love.

And yet, Judas was there at the Last Supper. So too were the disciples who later betrayed the Lord, abandoned him, and fled. We are no different. We too are weak in the face of sin. We live burdened by self-justification, self-interest, and human foolishness. And yet it is precisely because we are such people that Jesus desires to wash and cleanse us, to give us his own life, and to love us to the very end.

When the Lord gave the Eucharist, he first washed the feet of his disciples. Like Peter, we do not fully understand from the beginning the meaning of what Jesus does for us. But through the joys and struggles of the life of faith, we are gradually brought to understand. Remember Peter: the one who denied Jesus and fled later gave his life in martyrdom on Vatican Hill, bearing witness to the memory of the Lord’s love, with the feet that had once been washed by Christ lifted toward heaven.

Tonight’s washing of feet is not simply an example of humility. It reveals that we ourselves must first be cleansed, forgiven, and loved by the Lord. And those who have been washed by him, those who have received his love, are then transformed into people who wash one another’s feet—that is, people who forgive one another and love one another. There, a deep gratitude to the Lord and the joy of faith are born.

Our world is filled with war, poverty, and conflict. But these are not only realities in distant places. Within ourselves too there is misunderstanding, unbelief, lack of love, hatred, discrimination, and selfishness. These are signs that we have not yet fully grasped what it means to have been washed, forgiven, and loved. That is why Jesus taught us to go on washing one another’s feet, to go on forgiving one another, and to go on loving one another. And the Lord has shown us this love not merely as a moral lesson, but by continually giving us his very life.

In this way, we are called to live this love of the Lord. In the Church, in the family, and in society, all are called to live with the heart of Christ. For this very purpose, tonight the Lord washes us, gives us the Bread of Life, and shows us his love to the end.

In this sacred liturgy, as those who are washed by the Lord, forgiven by the Lord, nourished by his Body, and filled with his love, let us renew our hearts and commemorate once more this wondrous saving work that God has left to us.
